Sri Lanka's main highlights are spectacular, but the country's true magic is often in the places most tourists never reach. Here are our favorite hidden gems.
Knuckles Mountain Range — A UNESCO World Heritage cloud forest with pristine hiking trails, remote villages, and endemic wildlife. Base yourself in a Kandyan homestay for 2–3 nights.
Haputale and Lipton's Seat — Quieter than Ella but with equally spectacular views, plus the famous Lipton's Seat viewpoint where Sir Thomas Lipton used to plan his tea empire.
Delft Island — A 1-hour boat ride from Jaffna, home to wild horses, ancient baobab trees, and coral walls.
Gal Oya National Park — Sri Lanka's least-visited national park, where you can take a boat safari and see elephants swimming between islands.
Mannar Island — A remote corner connected to India by Adam's Bridge, with unique culture, birdlife, and historical sites.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage — Controversial, but a major draw for many first-time visitors. We can also arrange visits to more ethical sanctuaries like the Udawalawe Transit Home.
Ussangoda — A rust-red, almost lunar landscape on the southern coast with unique ecology and dramatic ocean views.
Combine one or two of these with a classic Sri Lanka itinerary for a trip that goes well beyond the brochure.
