Sri Lanka's south coast is one of the world's top whale watching destinations. The deep waters off Mirissa are a major migration route for blue whales, and the area is also home to resident pods of sperm whales, spinner dolphins, and (less commonly) orcas.
Best season: November to April, with peak sightings in December and January.
What to expect: Boats depart Mirissa harbor at 6:30am and return around noon. The ride to the whale grounds takes 30–60 minutes. Most boats carry 50–80 passengers; private charters are available for a premium experience.
Responsible operators: Choose operators that follow the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) guidelines — no more than three boats around a whale at any time, minimum approach distance, and limited engine use. NAVRO partners with the most ethical operators in Mirissa.
What to bring: Sunscreen, a hat, motion sickness pills (if prone), a light jacket, and a zoom lens if you enjoy photography.
