Galle Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1588 and later fortified by the Dutch, is a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sri Lanka's southwestern tip. Its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, boutique shops, and rampart walks make it one of the most atmospheric places in South Asia.
Highlights: Galle Lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church, the Maritime Museum, the rampart walk at sunset, the Meeran Mosque, and the boutique shops and cafes of Leyn Baan Street.
How long: Plan 4–6 hours to fully explore the fort on foot.
Where to stay: Amangalla (inside the fort), Fort Bazaar, and the Sun House.
When to go: November to April for the best weather. Mornings are quieter for photography.
