Sigiriya Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know

NAVRO Travel Guide March 15, 2025 10 min read

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sri Lanka's most iconic attraction. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, this 200-metre rock fortress features remarkable frescoes, the famous Mirror Wall, lion's paw gateway, and panoramic views from the summit.

How to visit: The site opens at 7am and closes at 5:30pm. Plan 2–3 hours for the climb. Foreign adult tickets cost around USD 30.

Best time to visit: Arrive at the opening time to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Sunrise is magical but requires a special permit.

Where to stay: Nearby luxury options include Ulagalla by Uga Escapes, Water Garden Sigiriya, and the Aliya Resort.

What else to see: Pair your visit with the Dambulla Cave Temple, Pidurangala Rock (for the famous Sigiriya sunrise viewpoint), and a safari in Minneriya.
