Mirissa is the quintessential southern Sri Lankan beach — a palm-fringed bay with calm swimming, a thriving beach-bar scene, and some of the best whale watching in the world just offshore.
Whale watching: Between November and April, blue and sperm whales visit the waters off Mirissa. Most tours depart at 6:30am and return by noon. Book with a responsible operator.
Beaches: Mirissa's main beach is great for swimming, while Secret Beach (a 10-minute walk west) is more secluded. Coconut Tree Hill is the iconic sunset photo spot.
Where to stay: Lantern Boutique Hotel, Ubuntu Beach Villas, and the Weligama Bay Marriott for upscale comfort.
How to get there: 2.5 hours by road from Colombo. About 30 minutes from Galle.
