Trincomalee, on Sri Lanka's northeast coast, is one of the deepest natural harbors in the world and a stunning beach destination in its own right. The city has a fascinating colonial history and some of the country's most beautiful, uncrowded beaches.
Beaches: Nilaveli and Marble Bay are pristine, palm-shaded, and offer excellent snorkeling. Uppuveli is closer to town and livelier.
Things to do: Visit Fort Frederick and Koneswaram Temple, snorkel at Pigeon Island, take a whale watching excursion (blue whales pass June to September), and visit the iconic hot springs at Kanniya.
Best time: May to September, when the east coast is sunny and dry.
Where to stay: Trinco Blu by Cinnamon, Jungle Beach by Uga Escapes, and Nilaveli Beach Hotel.
